United’s first teen star resurfaces

As if D.C. United needed one more reminder of how far it lags behind the rest of Major League Soccer, its first teenage prodigy, Bobby Convey, has resurfaced to become one of the best wingers in the league this season. And he was one of the top performers for the San Jose Earthquakes in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

Among the youngsters United has ushered into the professional ranks over the past decade — including Santino Quaranta, Freddy Adu and Andy Najar — Convey was the first, joining D.C. in 2000 at age 17.

Eleven seasons later — including five with Reading in England — Convey racked up a career-high 10 assists en route to being nominated for MLS comeback player of the year. Unfortunately, his assist and two goals that eliminated favored New York last week won’t clinch the award for him, though they should.

“It’s always good to be part of a winning team,” said Convey, who’s always let his actions on the field speak louder than his words. “I think the experience in England obviously helped me grow up and become a better player. Hopefully I can help some guys here with nerves or whatever, but I think we have a good bunch of guys.”
