GOP: Focus will be on Obamacare, Iran deal

Touting a list of accomplishments for the Republican-led Congress, Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., said in the GOP weekly address that the party’s priorities are on repealing Obamacare and stopping President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

“If Obamacare’s next round of regulations take effect on January 1st — mere months from now — small businesses will be forced into larger group insurance markets that have dramatically higher rates,” Guthrie said in the address published Saturday.

Guthrie touted legislation he’s introduced to allow companies with 51-100 employees to avoid the law’s mandates. “We’re fully committed to repealing Obamacare,” he said.

He has also introduced the version of the resolution in the House that would express disapproval with Obama’s deal struck with the Iranian government over its nuclear program.

“Like many Americans, I have grave concerns about this deal, and whether it will make our country safer,” he said. “Every Republican — and every Democrat — has to determine whether the president’s deal meets that essential standard.”

Congress has until mid-September to review the deal, needing a two-thirds majority to stop it. While it will be difficult for opponents of the deal to peel off enough members of Obama’s party in the Senate to clear that bar, the administration is counting every vote.

Guthrie, who represents the 2nd District making up much of west and central Kentucky, claimed that the GOP Congress has been “making progress” in its first seven months.

Among the accomplishments he cited were the passage of a balanced budget blueprint, a veterans’ bill, an anti-human trafficking measure, the trade promotion authority given to the president and the Medicare “doc fix” legislation passed in the spring.

“These initiatives are already making a real difference. And they show what we can achieve when we find common ground,” Guthrie said. “But, of course, we know that we have a long way to go.”
