OTISCO, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 68-year-old man found dead in a central New York lake had been kayaking by himself while not wearing a floatation device.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office says two kayakers discovered a body floating in Otisco Lake, 13 miles southwest of Syracuse.

Deputies say the body was spotted around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in about 8 feet of water off the west shore of the lake near Amber Beach Road. The kayakers were able to alert a nearby boater who assisted with bringing the body to shore.

Police say the man has been identified as Douglas Axe of Camillus, near Syracuse. Deputies say his overturned kayak was found near his body.

Officials say they believe Axe’s death to have been accidental. The official cause of death will be determined by the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
