The United States’ campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is not a reason to ignore a nuclear Iran, Sen. Ted Cruz argued Monday.
Americans continue to suffer in the country, while “the Obama administration remains determined to pursue a path of diplomatic rapprochement to resolve the Islamic Republic’s pursuit of nuclear weapons,” the Texas Republican wrote in a Politico op-ed Sunday.
Cruz criticized President Obama’s United Nations General Assembly speech last week for leaving out “the grim threat posed to the United States and our allies by a nuclear-armed Iran.”
“There was no mention of Iran’s robust intercontinental ballistic missile program, the only purpose of which is to deliver a nuclear weapon,” in his speech, Cruz writes.
Cruz is “on the verge of getting into” the 2016 presidential race, according to an adviser — and this op-ed may be a small stepping stone for the foreign policy agenda he could run on.
A RealClearPolitics average of polls has Cruz polling fifth behind Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Paul Ryan.
