Notre Dame Prep wanted revenge on Tuesday.
The Blazers were playing at Roland Park Country School in the quarterfinal round of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference Tournament. In the previous meeting between the two teams, Roland Park (10-3) defeated Notre Dame (11-6) handily, 13-3. Roland Park did not falter at home, however, and won the Tuesday game in the last 12 seconds, 10-9.
Notre Dame appeared to have the game in hand, taking a three-goal lead at half, and stretching it to four early in the second half. The Reds went on a 5-0 run with 13 minutes to play and won the game.
Notre Dame head coach Mary Bartel said her team played better this time. “We threw and caught well, and we found the goal,” Bartel said. “We got ahead and settled to a point where we lost our intensity.”
Notre Dame led, 9-5, with 13:15 to play in the game. That is when senior Laura Keenan scored her fourth goal of the game, and started the final five-goal run.
Erin Millon, the Roland Park head coach, said that her team fell back into a habit it was in early in the season: falling behind and having to catch up with time running out. “It is a mark of a great team to pull it together when you are down and short on time,” Millon said.
With slightly more than four minutes to play, Courtney Kirk scored her only goal of the game and it was a big one. She tied the game at 9-9. With 33 seconds remaining Roland Park senior Brittany Kalkstein fed Kate Goytisolo, who scored the game winner with 12 seconds left.
Goytisolo had two goals, as did Barbara Seaman, while Abby Mitchell scored a single goal. Molly Ford had four goals for Notre Dame Prep in the loss. Erin Laschinger and Caitlin Wier scored twice for the Blazers, with Caitlyn McFadden adding a goal.
