Police have identified the victim in a fatal crash as 56-year-old Robert Bittner.
Bittner, of Ashburn, was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry that crashed on the Fairfax County Parkway around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Fairfax County Police said.
Bittner had driven off the roadway just past Franklin Farms Road and then hit the sound barrier wall. Passersby got Bittner out of the car, and then it caught fire, police said.
Bittner was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.
Police do not believe that speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
