Obama to donors: expect voter ‘skepticism’

President Obama, acknowleding disappointment with his hope and change promises of 2008, warned campaign donors that he faces “skepticism” and “pushback” from voters this year as he pursues a second term.

“It’s not a slam-dunk,” Obama said, during a fundraiser yesterday, of his reelection. “It’s understandable [given the state of the economy] if people aren’t feeling as chipper as they were back in 2008.  There’s going to be some skepticism.  There’s going to be some pushback.”

The president explained that his economic policies “don’t mean that much to somebody if they’re still out of work right now, or their house is still underwater by $100,000.”

Obama called for continuing support by updating his 2008 America-at-a-crossroads meme. “Back in 2008, we used to talk about this being a historic moment for America, that we were at a crossroads in our history,” Obama said. “Well, we haven’t fully crossed the road, and in some ways, 2012 is even more important than it was four years ago.”
