Suspect in Petworth attacks declared incompetent

The teenager suspected in a series of hammer attacks in Petworth last month has been declared incompetent to stand trial.

Michael Davis, 19, is charged with first-degree murder while armed for the April 24 death of 66-year-old Gary Dederichs. He also faces assault with intent to kill charges for two other attacks that occurred in Petworth that week.

The Associated Press reported that Davis was declared incompetent Friday based on a psychologist’s recommendation.

Davis is scheduled to return to court in July for another mental observation hearing to determine whether he has become competent, a court official said.
