Kentucky, where a man’s housing stipend is his castle

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo, D, gets a $30,000 annual housing stipend as part of his pay. It is intended to make up for the fact that he has to maintain an extra home near his state’s capitol to perform his official duties. On weekends, he goes home to Hazard, Ky. and sees patients (he is a doctor).

But instead of renting a home in Frankfort, Mongiardo has been staying with his in-laws while taking the housing stipend. So his Democratic primary challenger, Attorney General Jack Conway, took advantage of a debate appearance on Friday to demand that he give the money back.

Mongiardo leads in the Democratic primary race.
