The House of Representatives is reconvening at 8 p.m. in another attempt to elect a House speaker after six previous failed attempts to do so.
A rebellion from conservative Republican representatives has crippled Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) dream of becoming speaker.
As of the sixth vote, 20 conservative Republicans have rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), while all 202 Democrats rallied behind Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
Not even urging from former President Donald Trump, who came to McCarthy’s aid Wednesday morning, was enough to budge the 20 Republican defectors.
McCarthy has insisted that he won’t budge either.
