Senate passes short-term spending bill; Capitol Police clash with Palestinian protesters

The Senate voted to punt a fight over government spending into early next year on Wednesday night, easily passing a funding bill the House approved the day before. The 87-11 vote all but guarantees Congress will avoid the holiday time crunch of past spending clashes. Senate Democrats wanted an extension into early December but ultimately agreed to funding into January and February after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) introduced a bill free of spending cuts or policy riders.

U.S. Capitol Police officers made arrests outside of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, with the arrests coming after a crowd of 150 illegal and “violent protesters” gathered outside the building. It is not clear how many of the protesters have been arrested, but they appeared to call for a ceasefire and support Palestinians in the war between Hamas and Israel, according to Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA).

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping would maintain direct contact in the coming months. Biden and Xi met for more than four hours Wednesday in San Francisco on the fringes of the 2023 APEC summit. The two leaders announced a preliminary agreement to disrupt the flow of fentanyl precursors to the United States and reopen military-to-military communications.
