Police: woman lied about being the driver who crashed into Riverdale apartment building

A man was cited for fleeing after he crashed a vehicle into an apartment building in Riverdale, and a woman was cited for initially telling police that she was the driver.

David Archibald Smith, 39, was the actual driver, and 36-year-old Akoswa J. Haynes was the one who lied to authorities, according to Prince George’s County police.

Early Sunday morning, police responded to the 6800 block of Riverdale Road. A resident of an apartment told police that a vehicle crashed through her bedroom window, throwing her from her bed to the floor. She was treated and released at a hospital.

Initially, Haynes told police that she was pulling into a parking space and accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the break, accelerating into the window. But after police received a tip from a local news reporter, they determined that Smith was the driver, police said.

Smith was cited for driving without a license, negligent driving, failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failure to return and remain at the scene of an accident involving attended property damage, failure of a vehicle driver in an accident to report property damage to nearest police and attempt by driver to elude uniform police by fleeing on foot, police said.

Haynes was cited for knowingly giving false accident report information, police said.
