Rare giraffe twins born at San Francisco Zoo

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twin giraffes were born at the San Francisco Zoo this week, but one of them has passed away.

KGO-TV reports (http://abc7ne.ws/1CexuOa ) the male giraffe calves were born Tuesday morning. One calf was born at approximately 100 pounds and was immediately alert and nursing from his mother, 11-year-old Bititi.

But the second calf was much smaller and weak at birth. His post-birth complications became untreatable and he passed away two days later.

The zoo’s president, Tanya Peterson, called the birth announcement bittersweet.

The station says twin giraffe births are extremely rare and that this was the tenth recorded live birth of giraffe twins in zoos around the world.
