Ryan: House GOP had a ‘great meeting’ with Trump

Following a meeting Thursday morning between Donald Trump and 200 GOP lawmakers, House Speaker Paul Ryan said “it’s clear” that Republicans are committed to taking back the White House in November.

“We had a great meeting, and I appreciate Donald Trump taking time to speak with House Republicans,” the Wisconsin congressman said in a statement. “Our members were grateful to hear about his general election plans and his desire to unify the party in advance of a critical election this November.”

Trump met with the House Republican conference at the Republican National Committee early in the morning before departing for a separate meeting with GOP members of the Senate. Those present said Trump spent much of the meeting slamming the media for misrepresenting his recent remarks about Saddam Hussein and outlining his strategy for the general election.

“It was an important opportunity for our members to get additional information about Mr. Trump’s campaign and ask questions about the issues that matter to Americans,” Ryan said.

He added, “It’s clear that our party is committed to defeating Hillary Clinton and Democrats this fall.”
