Tom Brady cited for working out in park closed over coronavirus, Tampa mayor says

NFL superstar Tom Brady was cited for working out in a closed park in his new city of Tampa, Florida.

Brady, 42, recently moved to Florida following his decision to leave the New England Patriots after 20 seasons to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While it’s unknown if the coronavirus will impact the start of the league’s upcoming season, the quarterback was trying to stay in shape by working out in a downtown park on Monday that had been closed to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor detailed the incident later that day during a joint press conference with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.

“Our parks are closed down, and so a lot of our parks staff they patrol around just to make sure that people aren’t doing contact sports and things like that, and saw an individual working out in one of our downtown parks,” Castor explained. “And she went over to tell him that it was closed and it was Tom Brady … He has been cited.”

The City of Tampa later tweeted, “Sorry @TomBrady! Our @tampaparksrec team can’t wait to welcome you and our entire community back with even bigger smiles — until then, stay safe and stay home as much as you can to help flatten the curve.”

The six-time Super Bowl winning quarterback signed a 2-year contract with the Buccaneers worth approximately $30 million last month.
