Officials in Denmark arrested a man they said was plotting terror attacks with a “militant Islamic motive.”
Danish police carried out a raid on Thursday and arrested the man, who has not yet been publicly identified, according to the New York Times. Flemming Drejer, the operative head of Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service, said after the arrest that the suspect had been attempting to secure weapons and equipment to follow through with “one or several” terrorist attacks.
“You must have no doubt that PET’s efforts have led to the prevention of a terrorist attack,” said Copenhagen Police Chief Inspector Bergen Skov, referencing the acronym for the Danish intelligence service.
Officials did not say where the suspect planned attacks or by what means he intended to carry them out. Drejer did say that authorities believe the man was acting alone and had “a militant Islamic motive.”
The suspect will have a pretrial custody hearing on Friday, which will be closed to the public and the press. The arrest comes after Danish authorities arrested about 20 people with ties to Islamist extremism in December, but officials said the man arrested on Thursday is not tied to the other cases.
