According to a new poll, a slim majority of Americans support President Trump’s calls for mass deportations of undocumented migrants.
The Politico/Morning Consult survey found that 51% of voters support the sweeping deportation raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, with 35% of voters in opposition to them.
The poll showed a sharp divide among Republicans and Democrats over the effort, with 85% of Republicans in favor compared to just 29% of Democrats. Additionally, 45% of overall voters said the U.S. is facing a “crisis of illegal immigration” at the border and 32% said the U.S. is facing a “problem” at the border. Only 13% said that the U.S. is not facing a crisis or problem.
Despite the announcement of massive raids in major cities across the U.S., there didn’t appear to be a major blitz of arrests last weekend, although Trump insisted that a number of deportation orders were carried out successfully.
“It starts on Sunday, and they’re going to take people out, and they’re going to bring them back to their countries, or they’re going to take criminals out — put them in prison or put them in prison in the countries they came from,” Trump said Friday.
