President Trump may get his 2020 reelection wish now that former Vice President Joe Biden, the leader in several polls on the Democratic primaries, has set January as his decision date.
“I know I have to make up my mind and I have to do it by January,” Biden said this week in Bogota, Colombia.
On CBS Wednesday night, Trump said his dream challenger would be Biden. He said, “I dream about Biden. That’s a dream. Look, Joe Biden ran three times. He never got more than 1 percent and President Obama took him out of the garbage heap, and everybody was shocked that he did. I’d love to have it be Biden.”
Biden has been the leader in 2020 Democratic polls, challenged only by Oprah Winfrey and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Sanders, widely expected to run for a second time, is playing up his progressive roots later this week when he travels to Kansas with New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Democratic pollster John Zogby told Secrets that he believes Biden is the best choice for the Democrats. He said that Biden could handle Trump’s attacks with humor and facts.
“I can see Biden standing up there and saying, ‘Oh Donald, don’t be ridiculous. Look what we accomplished,’” said Zogby.
And he said in his blog for Forbes:
“It is Mr. Biden who has the strongest case for the nomination at this point in time. First, he left office with higher popularity than when he entered. He brought instant credibility to his younger and less experienced boss, President Barack Obama. They were a good team and the national exit polls in 2016 showed that among those who voted, Mr. Obama would have beaten Donald Trump 54% to 42% — the same electorate that favored Mrs. Clinton over Mr. Trump by only 48% to 46%. The last election was not a repudiation of the Obama-Biden years but rather a statement about Mrs. Clinton who was trusted by only 37% of that same electorate.”
