Rep. Andy Biggs accused former President Barack Obama of attempting to orchestrate a coup to undermine President Trump.
Biggs, the leader of the House Freedom Caucus, made the accusation Monday on Lou Dobbs Tonight, arguing that Obama knowingly conspired with officials in his administration to hamper his successor specifically while investigating then-incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn in late 2016.
The Arizona Republican was joined by fellow GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, who walked viewers through a series of events in January 2017 that he argued was damning toward the Obama administration and “tell us everything.”
“Those three weeks in January tell us everything, and the president is exactly right,” the Ohio lawmaker claimed. “If it can happen to him, imagine what they can do to you, to Andy, to me, and more importantly, to any American citizen. That’s why this is so darn wrong.”
Dobbs then turned to Biggs, noting that Jordan “obviously believes” Obama was “responsible for the conspiracy against this president,” and asked if he agreed with Jordan’s conclusion.
“Well, I think all the evidence — Jim gave you a great timeline — but all the evidence does point to coming right out of the top from President Obama on down,” Biggs said.
“This really was a conspiracy to do something that we’ve not seen in American history, and that was to actually perform a coup,” he continued. “That’s really what this was. I mean, you can’t get to it any more succinctly than that. This was an attempt to undermine the election of the people. That’s a coup. And they were abusing their power, abusing the process, and they were — yeah, they were using the media.”
The president and many of his most ardent supporters have argued that the Department of Justice’s decision to drop the charges against Flynn is evidence that the Obama administration was actively trying to hurt the incoming president.
