One dead and four injured, including 3-month-old, at Virginia apartment complex shooting

A shooting at a Richmond, Virginia, apartment complex left a woman dead and four others injured, including an infant.

Richmond police were called to the apartment complex around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday where they discovered that two adult women and two teenagers, as well as a 3-month-old infant, had been shot.

One of the women later died at a local hospital, and the infant is in serious condition, Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith said.

“It’s just a heinous act that baffles the mind as to why anyone would do this in a quad full of children just out enjoying themselves,” Smith said during a press conference.

The shooter opened fire on the group of people before another person returned fire, Smith said, though it is unclear who returned fire.

“They had no guard for the individuals that were out there,” Smith said of the victims.

“Earlier this evening, five innocent bystanders in our city were shot, one fatally, in a single, senseless act of gun violence,” said Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney. “This is a tragedy that no community should have to experience. My heart aches for our families.”

The Washington Examiner could not immediately reach the Richmond Police Department for more information about the shooting and potential suspects.
