History abandons series on Clinton impeachment

After getting the go-ahead last fall, a History series set to explore former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial has been scrapped by the network.

History initially ordered six episodes of the series — based on Peter Baker’s bestselling book, The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and Trial of William Jefferson Clinton — last September, but recently pulled the plug on the project, according to Variety. At the time, Emmy-winning executive producer and director R.J. Cutler described “The Breach” in a press release as “a thrilling tale of personal and professional ambition, of enormous hubris in the name of acquiring power, and of personal foibles, all of which nearly brought down a presidency.”

According to a report in Deadline, “The producers made several offers to A-list actors for the leads, but no one had been cast.”

Ryan Murphy recently abandoned his plans to adapt Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal that Nearly Brought Down a President into the next season of “American Crime Story” because Monica Lewinsky declined to be involved with the project.

TV series get canceled for a lot of reasons, but this one is sure to raise suspicions given the heightened profile of its subjects — and their sway in Hollywood.
