Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is being stripped of his security detail ahead of schedule at the request of current Gov. Phil Murphy, according to a new report.
Former governors in the state are guaranteed six months of security from the New Jersey State Police. However, the former Republican governor’s security detail is set to end roughly two weeks ahead of the six-month mark, according to sources who spoke to NJ Advance Media on the condition of anonymity.
The decision to strip Christie of his security came at the order of the Murphy administration, a progressive Democrat looking to overturn much of the mark his predecessor left on the state, the sources revealed.
When asked if he gave the green light to the order on Tuesday, Murphy declined to comment and told people to refer to the New Jersey State Police for clarification, which also declined to comment.
However, Murphy has been no stranger to tearing down his predecessor during his first months in office.
“This is not Chris Christie’s New Jersey,” the Democratic governor declared last week.
Christie left office on Jan. 16 after serving eight years largely defined by his handling of the Bridgegate controversy, Superstorm Sandy, budget cuts, and his 2016 presidential run.
