George Conway: Trump might need to be impeached a second time

Conservative attorney George Conway floated the idea of impeaching President Trump for a second time after his ousting of two impeachment witnesses.

“If this were a criminal investigation, and Alexander Vindman and Sondland had given their testimony to a grand jury, this Friday Night Massacre could have been a crime,” Conway wrote in a Tuesday opinion article for the Washington Post.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and now-former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland testified during the House’s impeachment investigation last year, which found that Trump abused his power by pressuring the president of Ukraine to investigate his domestic political rival. At the time, Trump’s associates were waging a pressured campaign urging Ukrainian officials to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

During a July 2019 phone call, which Vindman listened in on, Trump asked the Ukrainian president to “do us a favor” and investigate the Bidens. Meanwhile, U.S. military aid to the country was temporarily held up. Vindman told House investigators he found the call to be concerning, “inappropriate,” and “improper.” Sondland also testified in the House proceedings.

Following the Senate’s acquittal of the president on two articles of impeachment, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, this month, both Vindman and Sondland were removed from their posts last week, along with Vindman’s twin brother Yevgeny Vindman. According to Conway, the move shows Trump’s unfitness for office goes far beyond the Ukraine scandal.

“But it’s really not about this one day, or this one egregious act,” he wrote. “It’s about who Trump is, who he always was and who he always will be. It’s about the complete mismatch between the man and the office he holds.

“He’ll only get worse. Narcissistic leaders such as Trump always do. As we’ve now seen, his rage leads to retribution and misconduct, which beget more criticism, and more investigation, and even more rage, retribution and misconduct. Over and over again,” he continued. “So America beware: The state is Trump, and he’s very, very angry. We might, indeed, have to do it again.”

Conway, a frequent Trump critic, is married to a top adviser to the president, Kellyanne Conway, one of Trump’s most defensive allies.
