President Trump said Wednesday that Florida’s progressive gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is the “dream” opponent for Republican candidate Rep. Ron DeSantis.
“Not only did Congressman Ron DeSantis easily win the Republican Primary, but his opponent in November is his biggest dream….a failed Socialist Mayor named Andrew Gillum who has allowed crime & many other problems to flourish in his city,” Trump posted to Twitter Wednesday morning. “This is not what Florida wants or needs!”

DeSantis, now a House Republican lawmaker, won the Republican primary Tuesday night with 56.5 percent of the vote, and Gillum, who Trump calls the “failed Socialist Mayor,” won the Democratic primary with 34.3 percent of the vote on his side.
Gillum shares many values with Democratic socialist Rep. Bernie Sanders, I- Vt., including raising the minimum wage and developing a free and universal healthcare system. Gillim is now the mayor of Tallahassee, and staged a come-from-behind win over his Democratic rival Gwen Graham.
