A Dutch soldier shot outside a hotel in Indianapolis has died from his injuries, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said Monday.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. Saturday outside a Hampton Inn in Indianapolis, where the soldier and other Dutch service members were staying. Two other Dutch commandos were injured in the shooting, and their conditions remain unchanged.
“The commando, who was in critical condition in a hospital in the American city of Indianapolis, died last night from his injuries. This happened in the presence of family and colleagues,” the Dutch Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The three soldiers are part of the Netherlands’s Commando Troops Corps, considered the special forces of the Royal Netherlands Army. They were in Indiana participating in drills, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense.
An Indiana National Guard spokesman confirmed to local outlet Fox 59 that the soldiers were training at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in southern Indiana.
The shooting happened during an off day from training, according to the ministry.
