The Labor Department is suing a Boston union for refusing to provide a union member full access to contracts negotiated with other employers.
The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Boston last month, claims that Unite Here Local 26 declined to provide copies of contracts requested by a Boston convention center banquet server who wanted to compare provisions in various contracts. When the Labor Department told the union to let the server review them, the union would not allow her to take notes.
That violates the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act, which requires unions to provide copies of its contracts to employees who request them, according to the Labor Department.
