Jim Williams: Ravens? radio coverage will give fans what they want

The new radio homes of the Ravens ? WBAL and 98Rock (WIYY-FM) ? have a-something-for-everyone philosophy, beginning with separate pregame shows.

WBAL will offer a more traditional show, with sports director Steve Davis heading up a large team of contributors who will focus on the X?s and the O?s. The show will air from 10 a.m. to kickoff for a 1 p.m. game. For all other games the show will also air for three hours prior to kickoff.

98 Rock will start things off at 7a.m. on game day, as they mix rock and football in a totally different show.

At 10 a.m., live from the stadium at all home games, Kirk McEwen and Mark Ondayko will be taking in the tailgate action and playing music.

Just like WBAL, 98 Rock will roll right up to kickoff, when both stations hand things off to Gerry Sandusky, the WBAL-TV sports director and play-by-play voice of the Ravens. Sandusky will be joined by former Baltimore Colts star Stan White and former Ravens standout Rob Burnett.

“This is why I got into broadcasting, to sit at the (microphone) and call the NFL in my hometown,” Sandusky said. “It is a dream come true. Stan is a guy with a great knowledge of the game, and he will be able to connect the dots, explaining why a certain run in the second quarter will be setting up something else in the forth quarter. Rob will give us a player?s perspective that is fresh, since he has played with so many of the present Ravens.”

There will be a guest sideline reporters and pre-taped sound bites from coaches and players that can be used during the broadcast. Also on board will be a former NFL official, who can explain any questionable calls.
