Trump won’t let up: ‘Mexico will pay for the wall’

Less than 24 hours after meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and laying out his immigration policies, Donald Trump reiterated his call for Mexico to build the wall on its border with the United States.

“Mexico will pay for the wall!” Trump tweeted early Thursday morning.

The Republican presidential nominee claimed Wednesday that the terms of construction for the border wall were not discussed during their meeting in Mexico City. However, Peña Nieto had a different take.

“At the start of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall,” Peña Nieto tweeted Wednesday night.

Jason Miller, Trump’s senior communications adviser, called the meeting “the first part of the discussion and a relationship builder” between the two men.

“It was not a negotiation, and that would have been inappropriate. It is unsurprising that they hold two different views on this issue, and we look forward to continuing the conversation,” he said in a statement following Peña Nieto’s tweet.

Trump’s trip took place just a few hours before his immigration speech in Arizona in which he reiterated the U.S.-Mexico border wall and the notion that Mexico will pay for it.
