One West Point cadet dead, at least 20 injured in training accident

Multiple U.S. Military Academy cadets have been injured following a crash near the Camp Natural Bridge training site Thursday.

West Point tweeted for people to avoid the area and that first responders are on the scene.

The cadets and active-duty personnel were in a five-ton cargo truck called a light medium tactical vehicle when it crashed.

One individual was killed in the crash. 20 cadets and two soldiers were injured, according to NBC 4.

West Point said the accident occurred around 6:45 a.m. and is under investigation.

After landing in Ireland, President Trump tweeted he was “So sorry to hear about the terrible accident involving our GREAT West Point Cadets.”

Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, superintendent for West Point, told reporters the cadets involved in the crash are part of the class of 2020. Injuries sustained in the crash ranged from abrasions to the face to a broken arm.

The group were going to take part in a land navigation course when the truck flipped over. The next of kin for the deceased cadet is being notified.
