A Tony Award-nominated actor has had his right leg amputated after he suffered complications from the coronavirus.
Nick Cordero’s wife, Amanda Kloots, announced on Instagram Saturday that her husband “made it out of surgery alive and is headed to his room to rest and recover.”
While he was hospitalized with the COVID-19 virus, the Broadway star began having clotting issues on his leg and was treated with blood thinners, but doctors had to stop his treatment after it caused internal bleeding.
“They had him on blood thinners for the clotting, unfortunately the blood thinners were causing other issues,” Kloots explained. “The right leg will be amputated.”
Cordero has been in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Los Angeles, California, where he is living while performing in Rock of Ages, since March. He has for some time been unconscious and on a ventilator. After his surgery, Kloots asked fans to share videos of them dancing and wishing for him to wake up using the hashtag #wakeupnick.
A GoFundMe fundraiser for the actor — who has also starred in Bullets Over Broadway, Waitress, and A Bronx Tale — and his wife and 10-month-old son has raised over $200,000.
