WHO: Internal Revenue Service
WHAT: Congress voted to extend the “temporary” $8,000 tax credit for homebuyers that was due to expire Nov. 30.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: IRS Inspector General J. Russell George told Congress that an audit uncovered rampant fraud in the program, including more than 19,300 applicants who illegally claimed $139 million in credits on their 2008 tax returns before purchasing homes. And 53 IRS employees were caught filing “illegal or inappropriate” claims.
