Former President Donald Trump recently lashed out at pro-lifers, blaming them for the Republican Party’s underwhelming 2022 midterm election performance.

In his complaint, Trump blatantly misrepresented the positions of pro-life politicians, falsely claiming that some of them opposed abortion in cases where the mother would otherwise die.

“It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the MidTerms. I was 233-20! It was the ‘abortion issue,’ poorly handled by many Republicans, especially those that firmly insisted on No Exceptions, even in the case of Rape, Incest, or Life of the Mother, that lost large numbers of Voters. Also, the people that pushed so hard, for decades, against abortion, got their wish from the U.S. Supreme Court, & just plain disappeared, not to be seen again. Plus, Mitch stupid $’s!” he
wrote on Truth Social
.

If Trump wants to abandon the pro-life movement because
awful and unqualified
U.S. Senate candidates he supported, including Herschel Walker and Mehmet Oz, lost winnable races, that is his choice. However, pro-lifers should return the favor by abandoning him and ensuring he loses the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

The pro-life movement helped elect Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Trump as presidents of the United States. It has been a major force in Republican politics for more than 40 years because this issue is important to millions of voters.

The pro-life movement
acknowledges the scientific consensus
that human life begins at conception. Therefore, pro-lifers oppose killing human beings before birth, as people across the political spectrum oppose killing innocent human beings after birth.

Defending the right to life is not an extreme position. It’s rational. The government and society
should do a better job
of preventing unintended pregnancies and offering support to mothers who face unintended pregnancies. However, killing innocent human beings is not the solution to these problems; legal abortion is a barbaric practice that has killed
more than 60 million babies
in the United States alone.

For pro-lifers, it’s an important issue. Not everyone votes for Republicans for the reasons Trump wants. Not everyone who votes for Republicans longs for
tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations
. They’re not begging for politicians such as Trump
who call Latin Americans rapists
and
put children in cages
. Nor do they deeply desire a president who
calls climate change a hoax
and makes it easier for big corporations to
dump toxic sludge into rivers
.

Social conservatives vote for Republicans because they have little alternative. On issues such as abortion and
transgenderism
, Republicans, on average, offer more common sense than Democratic politicians — even if it means putting up with Trump’s
embarrassing and unpresidential behavior
.

Putting on the Supreme Court three pro-life justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade was Trump’s
greatest achievement as president
. But if he wants to be a coward, run away from that impressive record, and bash pro-lifers, add that to the long list of reasons why he deserves to lose the 2024 Republican primary.
