Maryland Republican Party Chairman Alex Mooney announced on Tuesday that he won’t challenge incumbent Roscoe Bartlett in the redrawn Sixth Congressional District.

In a news conference in Frederick, Mooney endorsed the 10-term congressman, who at 85, faces a stiff challenge in a congressional district that now includes a new swath of liberal-leaning voters from Montgomery County.

Candidates have until Wednesday to file for the 2012 election.

Five Republicans have declared their intentions to run for the seat, but Democratic Montgomery County State Sen. Rob Garagiola has emerged as the frontrunner in the competitive race.
