Michelle Obama was nominated for a Grammy award for the audio version of her memoir, Becoming.
The nomination, which was announced Wednesday morning, is for best spoken word album. The former first lady’s book was released in November 2018, including the audiobook, which she narrated.
Obama, 55, used her memoir as the cornerstone of her nationwide stadium tour. Tickets for her book tour sold for as much as $3,000 in 10 cities throughout the country.
She was nominated alongside musician Eric Alexandrakis, poet Sekou Andrews, actor John Waters, and the Beastie Boys. Past winners of the best spoken word Grammy include several former presidents.
President Jimmy Carter earned the award three times. President Bill Clinton won the award twice, as did President Barack Obama.
The Grammy Awards show has a history of being politically divisive. In 2019, vocalist Joy Villa arrived at the show in a “build the wall” dress while Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance to tell the crowd that “music has always helped” her tell her story.
The awards will be distributed on CBS on January 26, 2020.
