Pelosi touts 'increased outside validation' for impeachment inquiry

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Democrats their effort to impeach President Trump is gaining support.

“This week, we have seen increased outside validation of our efforts to hold the President accountable,” Pelosi wrote to Democrats ahead of lawmakers returning to the Capitol next week.

The California Democrat pointed rank-and-file Democrats to an op-ed published Thursday from 17 former prosecutors who worked on the Watergate investigation that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

“The president’s refusal to cooperate in confirming (or disputing) the facts already on the public record should not delay or frustrate the House’s performance of its constitutional duty,” the former prosecutors wrote.

Pelosi also noted the statement issued Thursday from GOP lawyers from past Republican administrations that called for an expeditious impeachment inquiry “into the president’s abuse of the office of the presidency for personal objectives and his violation of the oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.”

The signers included George Conway, the husband of top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway and a staunch and vocal opponent of President Trump.

Pelosi will hold a conference call with Democrats at 4 p.m.

“The president’s actions threaten our national security, violate our Constitution and undermine the integrity of our elections,” she wrote to Democrats. “No one is above the law. The president will be held accountable.”
