Former special counsel Robert Mueller’s marathon testimony on the Russia investigation did little to move the needle on support for impeaching President Trump.
Thirty-seven percent of voters want Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Friday. The poll found 46% oppose such proceedings and 16% are undecided.
A previous poll on impeachment, conducted days before Mueller testified, found 38% of voters supported it while 50% opposed it.
Democratic voters strongly support initiating impeachment proceedings, with 64% in favor and 18% against it. Only 6% of Republican voters back it compared to 86% opposing the proceedings. More independents oppose it (42%) than support it (34%).
A growing number of House Democrats want to begin impeachment proceedings (roughly 100 have expressed support for it so far), but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opposes it. And time may be running out. Rep. Jackie Speier of California said Thursday if a majority of House Democrats do not support an impeachment inquiry by the end of the August recess, it will be time to “shut it down.”
The poll surveyed 1,992 registered voters after Mueller’s testimony. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
