Drudge pleads: Stop the smiting!

Matt Drudge sent a rare communique on Twitter on Tuesday in order to make a tongue-in-cheek plea for the commentariat to take it easy on Ted Cruz, presumably for the good of pundit Glenn Beck.

“STOP THE SMITING!” Drudge wrote, linking to a story that prominently featured Beck, who has campaigned tirelessly for Cruz, with his face in a bowl of Cheetos. The founder and CEO of The Blaze media empire notoriously rubbed his face with Cheeto dust last week in a purported effort to look more like Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump.

Beck, who laid off 40 employees in April to satisfy the requirements of a multi-million-dollar bank loan, has been a popular topic on The Drudge Report this week. Links on Monday and Tuesday prominently featured stories about Beck’s request that supporters engage in fasting and prayer for Cruz. Beck suggested that supporters “beg the Lord to not remove his hand from us” by allowing Trump to win Tuesday’s primary in Indiana.

Mirroring Beck’s religious imagery, Drudge on Monday linked to a story about a boy who heckled Cruz at an Indiana rally. “Boy smites Cruz at rally: You suck!” Drudge succinctly opined.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Marist poll conducted last week indicated that 49 percent of Indiana Republicans supported Trump compared to 34 who favored Cruz.
