Watch: Bill Clinton wishes he weren’t married to Hillary

Former president Bill Clinton said Monday that he sometimes wishes he wasn’t married to Hillary Clinton, but only so he could speak more freely about the front-runner Democratic candidate for president.

“The hotter this election gets, the more I wish I were just a former president and just for a few months not the spouse of the next one,” Clinton said in New Hampshire of his wife. “Because, you know, I have to be careful what I say.”

Clinton later repeated that line.

“Tonight my job is to introduce Hillary,” he said. “Sometimes when I’m on a stage like this, I wish we weren’t married. Then I could say what I really think.”

The Clintons’ marriage has become a topic of the 2016 White House race. Last year, Trump warned the couple that any effort on their part to smear him as sexist would force Trump to bring up Bill Clinton’s extra-marital affairs.

That threat seemed to shut down the Clintons’ plans to use that line of attack on Trump.
