Sen. Tim Scott dodges questions about Trump considering him for vice president: ‘Shouldn’t make this about me’

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) danced around questions about potentially becoming former President Donald Trump’s running mate as speculation arises about his 2024 ticket, saying the focus shouldn’t be on him or another possible candidate for vice president.

“My answer would be yes to America having four more years of Donald Trump. I don’t think any one of us should make this about me or any other person who might be the candidate for vice president,” Scott told Fox News’s Sean Hannity on Tuesday.

Trump was not on Nevada’s primary ballot, which former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley lost on Tuesday to “none of these candidates.” Haley’s stinging defeat without Trump on the ballot further cements his status to become the Republican nominee. Trump will also appear on the ballot in Thursday’s caucuses.

In a likely rematch between President Joe Biden and Trump, Scott has been floated by the Republican front-runner as a contender for vice president in 2024. During a Fox News Sunday Morning Futures interview, Trump mentioned Scott and Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) when pressed about who he would ask to be his running mate.

“Not for a while. We have so many great people in the Republican Party, but not for a while,” Trump said regarding the timeline of his vice presidential pick.

Scott, who dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in November as Trump’s dominance built, has since joined the GOP favorite on the campaign trail after refusing to give his endorsement to Haley, the former South Carolina governor who appointed Scott to the United States Senate.

“Listen, everybody wants to serve their country, and the best way for me to serve my country right now is to make sure that Donald Trump gets four more years,” Scott said when asked by Hannity if he would say yes to being Trump’s second. “We’re better off under Trump. You and I both know it.”

“Let’s vote for him, but let’s also get out and campaign for Donald Trump. We cannot afford people losing hope in the American dream because Joe Biden gets another four years with Donald Trump, low inflation, low crime. We have law and order once again. It’s a good day for America,” Scott added.
