Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) took a crack at former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Tuesday night, endorsing him for Republican National Committee chairman after current Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announced she may step down.
“I fully endorse Kevin McCarthy for RNC Chair,” Gaetz wrote on X. “Kevin is well organized and a very high-revenue fundraiser. He will also be well-liked by the RNC Committee. The RNC Chair doesn’t make any policy decisions, set any agenda, or negotiate against Democrats, ever. Kevin would be terrific.”
Gaetz continued flaming the former speaker on the platform Wednesday in a response to Rep. Thomas Massie’s (R-KY) X post in which he said ousting McCarthy has become “an unmitigated disaster.” Gaetz responded with a post roasting McCarthy for sending money to Ukraine.
The Florida representative moved to oust McCarthy in October and has repeatedly criticized him since his speakership was removed. Last November, McCarthy shot back with his own comments, telling CNN the Republican Party would benefit “tremendously” if Gaetz were removed from the House.
Gaetz’s social media comments come after McDaniel announced she is preparing to step down from her role after the South Carolina primary on Feb. 24. Then-President Donald Trump appointed her to the position in 2017. McDaniel has been accused of leading the party’s demise since GOP losses in 2018 and 2020.
“Nothing has changed. This will be decided after South Carolina,” RNC spokesman Keith Schipper told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday.

Sources told the New York Times that Trump plans to endorse North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley to assume the vacancy. On Sunday, Trump told Fox News that McDaniel was helpful to him in 2016 but alluded to her impending removal as chairwoman.
“I think she did OK initially in the RNC,” Trump said. “I would say right now there will probably be some changes made.”
