PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of Rhode Island as the hot, sticky weather continues with temperatures expected in the upper 90s.
The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday until 7 p.m. for parts of Providence and Kent counties. The heat index could make it feel as hot as 103.
The state has also issued an air quality alert, saying air quality will reach unhealthy levels, especially in southern Rhode Island in the afternoon. The health department recommends limiting outdoor exposure and staying in air-conditioned environments.
Providence and other localities are keeping designated locations open as cooling shelters, and several water parks are opening in the capital. Public transit, including trolleys and buses, are free for riders on Thursday to discourage driving.
