California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants you to believe there is a “red state murder problem.” In reality, the murder problem stems from Democrat-run cities.
Newsom boasted that his first post on former President Donald Trump’s Truth Social website would be “breaking down America’s red state murder problem.” Indeed, the states with the highest murder rates include Alabama, Mississippi, and Missouri, as well as Louisiana, a red state that is governed by a Democrat. But most of those homicides occur in cities, and those cities are run by Democrats.
Using 2019 homicide data, Louisiana has three cities among the top 25 most deadly. Shreveport, ranked 25th, has been run by Democrats since 1998 and has been run by Republicans for a total of eight years since 1874. New Orleans is the seventh deadliest, and Baton Rouge is the sixth. New Orleans has been run by Democrats every year since 1872. Baton Rouge’s last Republican mayor left office in 2005.
Alabama has three cities in the top 26: Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Birmingham. All three are run by Democrats. Missouri has two cities in the top 10, with Kansas City (eighth) last having a Republican mayor in 1991 and St. Louis (the deadliest city in the country) being run by Democrats since 1949. (Mississippi does not have a city among the 65 deadliest in the country.)
Among the deadliest cities, Democrats have enjoyed total control. Baltimore, Maryland, is the second deadliest city and has been run by Democrats since 1967. Detroit, Michigan, has been run by Democrats since 1962. Memphis, Tennessee, has been run by Democrats for at least the last decade. Ohio has two cities in the top 10 in homicides: Cleveland has been run by Democrats since 1990, and Dayton has been Democrat-controlled since 2001.
Newsom can pretend this is a GOP problem all he wants, but Republican governors run their states, not individual cities. Those cities are run by Democrats and have been for decades, and they’ve allowed crime to continue because they would rather blame Republicans than try to protect the residents who elect them.
