Pence blames birther issue on Clinton’s ‘defenders’ in press

President Obama’s birth certificate is being used by Hillary Clinton’s “defenders in the national media” to distract from the suffering wrought by Democratic economic policies, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said on Sunday.

“Throughout this campaign, he has not been talking about it,” Pence said of Donald Trump in an interview with ABC’s Martha Raddatz. “He’s been talking about the need to have a stronger America at home and abroad.

“I understand why Hillary Clinton and many of her defenders in the national media want to distract attention from her dishonesty and disastrous record on the foreign stage, and the fact that she wants to simply continue the failed policies of this administration that have run our economy literally into the ditch,” Pence said. “That’s not working. I promise you the American people see through all of this. I think that’s [why] Donald Trump’s going to be the next president.”

Raddatz said Trump was responsible for creating the issue and challenged a claim that Hillary Clinton initiated it in 2008. “What is the proof? We can’t find any, and our fact checkers have looked into it, that Hillary Clinton started the birther movement … reports from people in my industry say there’s no proof Hillary Clinton had anything to do with it.”

“I understand your perspective on it,” Pence replied. “I understand the desire of many in the national media to change the subject from Hillary Clinton’s disastrous record and her dishonesty. We’re just not going to play that game. Donald Trump and I are going to continue to focus right where the american people are focused.”

Clinton campaign associates allegedly including senior aide Sidney Blumenthal began circulating the story during Clinton’s 2008 presidential primary campaign against Obama.

Pence said the media was trying to distract from Trump’s message and praised him for playing the media earlier in the week. “Donald Trump on Friday used the media’s preoccupation with certain sidebar issues to focus on the support that we enjoy from retired admirals and generals, fourteen Medal of Honor winners, now, I think, some 150 retired flag officers in our military recognize that Donald Trump is the right choice for the next commander-in-chief of the United States.”

Trump on Friday held a press conference that many believed would focus on the issue of the president’s birth certificate, but ultimately focused on his military endorsements.
