‘Above my paygrade’: Biden punts on the ‘Liz Cheney-McCarthy thing’

President Joe Biden declined to weigh in on Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and his Republican conference’s decision to oust former conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney from her post.

Biden, fielding questions from MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell in an interview that aired Wednesday night, said the “Liz Cheney-[Kevin] McCarthy thing” was “above my paygrade.”

The president quipped he has “enough trouble trying to figure out my own party all the time, let alone the Republicans.”

O’Donnell further pressed Biden to clarify how he can negotiate an infrastructure compromise in good faith with McCarthy, “the same person who supported Liz Cheney weeks ago.”

“If a man looks me in the eye and gives me his word that something’s going to happen, I take it unless he breaks it,” he responded. “He may have broken his word to somebody else, but to me, he has made that deal.”

“We’re nowhere near having made a deal. We agree that we should try to get a bipartisan agreement,” Biden said of the House GOP leader.

Biden conceded that his meeting earlier in the day with McCarthy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer did not end in an actual deal, rather an understanding that “we should try to get a bipartisan agreement.”
