Democratic Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee was not happy when a mother began documenting a Tuesday hearing on Capitol Hill regarding discrimination and critical race theory on her phone.
Asra Nomani, a mother who was serving as a witness in the hearing, caught Lee off guard when the congresswoman looked up to see a phone out and recording.

We are grateful that the courts have responded to perceived discrimination, but in any event, what I would clearly say — you need to put down your camera,” Lee said. “Please, you need to put down your camera. You need to put down your camera.”
https://twitter.com/AsraNomani/status/1498891531440336899Nomani, who wore a shirt that read, “I’m a Mom, not a ‘domestic terrorist,'” challenged Lee.
“Why do I have to put down my camera?” Nomani asked.
A man could be heard off in the distance saying that she is already on video and that there is no rule against Nomani video recording as well.
“I mean, this is free speech,” the mother added.
After turning off her microphone for a private consultation about the situation, Lee then told Nomani that she “asked respectfully and you choose not to be respectful, and so I will allow you to continue on. Thank you so very much.”
“But in any event, I believe that this hearing deals with the impact of discrimination on the groups that have suffered discrimination in such a large way,” Lee continued.
“I’m disappointed that CRT has been politicized to attack people who simply want to ensure that our children have an opportunity to be engaged in diversity.”

“How did we go from this ideology of critical race theory that says we must look at all of society through the lens of race and then become this, ‘How To Be An Antiracist,’ in which this ideologue says that we can only correct past discrimination by present discrimination. What kind of country is this?” Nomani said while showing several books during her testimony.
“This is not the kind of country my father came to.”

Nomani also noted that her son experienced racism because he did not belong to the “right” minority group. She expressed concern that other students are also facing racial discrimination as a result of critical race theory.
