Abe Thompson finished his decorated amateur soccer career as a Virginia state championship winner with W.T. Woodson High, a national club champion with Braddock Road and the all-time leading points scorer in Maryland Terrapins history.
Averaging just three goals and three assists in his first two years in Major League Soccer, his professional career hasn’t been nearly as glorious. But with an assist in each of his last two starts, Thompson is forcing his way into what is becoming the league’s deepest attacking lineup at FC Dallas.
“He’s had to be patient and wait for his chance, and when he does get a chance, he takes it very well,” said first-year Dallas coach Steve Morrow. “I think his all-around game has improved. He holds the ball up very well for us, he’s a great team player, works very hard, and in my opinion, he’s one of the best finishers we’ve got on the club.”
When Thompson arrived in Texas as a rookie in 2005, a trade with Los Angeles brought Carlos Ruiz, one of the league’s best finishers, to Dallas. Last year the club welcomed back hometown hero Kenny Cooper, who had played with Manchester United’s reserves and leads the team this year with four goals. Second-year speedster Dominic Oduro (one goal) and Roberto Miña (currently injured) are also fighting for time, but all five, including Thompson, are quality attackers.
“I’m fine with that,” said Thompson. “I understand that in the long run, it’s going to benefit the team, but at the same time, when I’m out there, I definitely feel the pressure to produce because there are two, three, four other guys in my position.”
In his third year, Thompson is fitter, stronger and playing more with his back to the goal. All that’s left is scoring more often.
“That’s the only thing he needs to add to his game, getting goals at that level,” said Morrow.
Should he start to do so more often, the same type of accolades he accumulated in his younger days are sure to follow.
