Bedard out for the season

Erik Bedard?s breakout season came to an end Sunday, as the Orioles placed their ace on the 60-day disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle.

Bedard, 28, is 13-5 and fourth in the American League with a 3.16 ERA. In his last start against Minnesota on Aug. 26, the Canadian set a team record with his 221st strikeout of the season, which also leads the majors.

“I don’t think there was a big inning against him,” Manager Dave Trembley said. “He just established himself as the No. 1 guy on this team and probably – he doesn’t like to know it, but he’s one of the better pitchers in the league. I think he established himself as that.”

He was widely considered to be among the front-runners for the American League Cy Young Award, despite his team’s record and fourth-place standing in the American League East.
