Police said 17 people were hurt when a charter bus carrying a kindergarten class bound for the National Zoo in Washington collided with a sport-utility vehicle on Thursday.

The crash happened when the SUV driver tried to turn onto Route 213 near Centreville at about 9 a.m. and turned into the path of the oncoming bus, according to Maryland State Police.

The bus was carrying 35 students, teachers and parents, police spokeswoman Elena Russo said. The SUV driver, 49-year-old Carl Trenz Jr., and 16 others were hospitalized with injuries. About 10 children were hurt, Russo said.

One adult woman was taken to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore; the others were taken to various local hospitals. Russo said she didn’t know their conditions.

The students were from Worton Elementary School in Kent County, Russo said.
