“This is what I call a target-rich environment.”
Paramount Pictures released the new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick Tuesday hinting at a return of Val Kilmer’s Iceman and a possible twist that could leave audiences shocked.
Opening with fighter jets screaming above the grounds of the Navy’s elite fighter weapons school, the trailer introduces viewers to the new crop of the Navy’s best pilots.

“Everyone here is the best there is,” a character named Trace says. “Who the hell are they going to get to teach us?”
Enter Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
Riding on a motorcycle set to the score reminiscent of the 1986 classic, Tom Cruise’s iconic character arrives on screen.
He’s set to instruct the next generation of naval aviators, but his reputation precedes him.
“You are here at the request of Adm. Kazansky, a.k.a. Iceman,” Cyclone, played by Jon Hamm, says. “He seems to think that you have something left to offer the Navy. What that is, I can’t imagine.”
“With all due respect, sir, I’m not a teacher,” Maverick replies with his familiar charm and smile. “Just want to manage expectations.”

Next comes a series of impressive aerial acrobatics that sees the legendary fighter pilot surprise those who appear to be his students and the promise of a deadly combat mission that “no living pilot has ever seen.”
“Someone’s not coming back from this,” Maverick says.
The trailer also teases at the tension between the legendary fighter pilot and Bradley Bradshaw (also known as Rooster), played by Miles Teller.
Bradshaw is the son of Maverick’s best friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. j.g. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who was killed during a training accident in the first film.
“My dad believed in you,” Rooster tells Maverick. “I’m not gonna make the same mistake.”
The film hits theaters on May 27.
