We’ve heard this tale before: Team gets No. 1 pick; team takes big stud; team watches big stud suffer season-ending injury. In fact, we heard it just three years ago when Portland watched No. 1 overall pick, and top big man, Greg Oden go down for the season with a knee injury.
And now we see the same thing happen to the Los Angeles Clippers and Blake Griffin, out for the season with a stress fracture in his knee.

Do not compare the two situations, however. The Blazers had a choice with Oden (who is again out for the year) and they picked him instead of Kevin Durant.
But the Clippers? They had no choice. If they didn’t pick Griffin, they would have been a laughingstock. Oh, yeah; they already are a perennial punchline (says the paper in Wizards territory). Can anyone even name the No. 2 pick from this past season? (Hasheem Thabeet to Memphis — had to look it up).
Griffin should recover. We think. They said the same thing, after all, about Oden. The Blazers are still waiting. The Clippers hope they’re not saying the same thing in two years.
